FOLLOWING INCREASED PRESSURE WEEDMAPS FINALLY ENDS ILLEGAL ADVERTISEMENTS FOR UNLICENSED CANNABIS RETAILERS

UCBA’s Long-Time Commitment to Enforcement of Weedmaps Sees Success

Los Angeles, CA – Following years of illegal operations and empty promises to stop, it was today announced that Weedmaps has finally ceased advertising for unlicensed cannabis retailers in California. The United Cannabis Business Association (UCBA), the leading voice for California’s legal retailers, has long been on the frontlines of this critical issue. Today’s announcement came after stakeholders like UCBA, the Newsom Administration and Los Angeles City Officials urged the platform to act quickly to set a clear timeline for compliance following its initial announcement on intent to comply weeks earlier.

Over the last two years through legislation and education, UCBA has worked to bring awareness to the prevalence and dangers of California’s unlicensed market, while advocating for increasing enforcement tools for state and local regulators. Just this year, UCBA helped to successfully pass AB 97, creating $30,000 fines for non-licensee violations, including Weedmaps’ operations.

UCBA Board President Jerred Kiloh offers the following statement in response to the announcement:

“Weedmaps’ decision to finally abide by the law is a clear culmination of mounting pressure from the licensed industry and public officials, and serves as a reminder that, without heightened enforcement, the thriving illicit market will only continue to endanger Californians and drive legal operators out.

“We greatly appreciate the support from the Administration and Bureau of Cannabis Control that led to today’s landmark announcement, but also ask for a continued commitment to enforcement from our state and local leaders so that the entire industry can grow.”

President Jerred Kiloh, is available to speak on the record as an expert source on California cannabis and the need for increased enforcement. To schedule an interview please contact Sarah Melbostad via email at smelbostad@fionahuttonassoc.com or by calling 415-717-6889.
