WEEDMAPS TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE AFTER YEARS OF ILLEGALLY ADVERTISING FOR UNLICENSED CANNABIS RETAILERS

UCBA’s Long-Time Efforts to Increase Enforcement Reaches a Critical Milestone

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 21, 2019

Los Angeles, CA – Following years of illegal operations, it was today announced that Weedmaps will cease advertising for unlicensed cannabis retailers in California. The United Cannabis Business Association (UCBA), the leading voice for California’s legal retailers, has long been on the frontlines of this critical issue.

Over the last two years through legislation and education, UCBA has worked to bring awareness to the prevalence and dangers of California’s unlicensed market, while advocating for increasing enforcement tools for state and local regulators. Just this year, UCBA helped to successfully pass AB 97, increasing fines for unlicensed operators. Simultaneously, UCBA is co-sponsoring and leading the charge behind AB 1417 (Rubio) alongside licensed retailers in Santa Ana, Long Beach, San Diego, San Francisco and the Coachella Valley. AB 1417 will restrict advertising and marketing by unlicensed cannabis retailers, preventing platforms, like Weedmaps, from continuing their illegal operations. AB 1417 is currently waiting to be heard by the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Today’s announcement is a step in the right direction and demonstrates the power of the ongoing collaboration between the state and UCBA to keep Californians safe and ensure the ongoing vitality of the legal cannabis market.

President Jerred Kiloh offers the following statement in response to the announcement:

“This action demonstrates that our efforts to curtail the dangerous operations of the unlicensed cannabis market are working and that there is a clear and pressing need to tackle this threat head-on.

“We must use this hard-fought window of opportunity to follow announcements with real action that will ensure those looking to skirt the law are not benefitting from ready access to the public. But time is of the essence – it is crucial to establish a near-term deadline in order to truly protect Californians.

“We are strongly encouraged by the support from state leadership on this issue and look forward to continued collaboration to pursue regulations that will enforce industry-wide solutions supporting the legal cannabis market.”
