LA’s illegal pot shops on verge of power shutoff, as City Hall poised to let DWP flip the switch

Los Angeles may soon have a new tool to crack down on the hundreds of illegal marijuana shops operating throughout the city.

On Friday, the City Council will consider authorizing the Department of Water and Power to shut off utilities at cannabis dispensaries, cultivators and other establishments, making it effectively impossible for them to do business.

The proposed ordinance was brought by L.A. City Councilwomen Nury Martinez and Monica Rodriguez, who say the measure would accelerate the city’s effort to shutter illicit pot shops, which have proliferated in parts of the city.
